Facebook to switch off controversial facial recognition feature following data protection concerns




Facebook is switching off its controversial facial recognition feature following concerns that members are unaware of what happens to the data they give up.
The tool takes information provided when users tag friends' faces in photos to make suggestions on the correct tags for future images.
Facebook say the software, which is also found in programs such as iPhoto, was introduced to make the tagging process simpler and faster.

However, the company has been heavily criticised for bringing in the feature in Europe in June last year without formally announcing its arrival on the site.
As with previous updates, Facebook introduced the adaptation by making it an automatic opt in for users.
